Québec maple syrup – Call for political commitment to support market development and protect its image

Québec City, May 8, 2026 — The Maple Industry Council (MIC) is calling on political parties to commit to promoting the development of maple product export markets and to protect the brand image of Québec maple syrup, in the lead-up to the next election campaign.

“The maple industry is a strategic economic driver for Québec. If we want to support its growth and protect its international reputation, we need concrete actions now—particularly in terms of market diversification and protecting the integrity of our products,” says Louis Turenne, President of the MIC.

A growing, but fragile, industry
In 2025, maple product exports rose by 16%, reaching $844 million. But this growth hangs in the balance—64% of these exports are destined for the American market, exposing the industry to the hazards of the current trade situation.

Market diversification is now not only essential, it’s urgent, particularly in Europe and Asia, in order to bolster the resilience of Québec businesses and support long-term growth.

Safeguarding quality and reputation
Maple syrup is known and renowned as a 100% pure product, a symbol of Québec knowhow. It is crucial to strengthen the mechanisms that prevent and penalize fraudulent practices, particularly the adulteration of maple syrup.

Adopting a more robust legislative framework—like the one in Vermont—would better safeguard the integrity of products, consumer trust, and the reputation of Québec maple syrup across international markets.

“Maple syrup is a source of Québec pride, but also a strategic economic asset. Québec has everything to gain by investing in the growth of the maple industry, a sector that generates wealth here and has reached consumers worldwide. At the same time, it’s imperative to protect Québec maple syrup’s brand image by adopting a law with more severe penalties for fraudulent practices like adulteration,” says MIC President Louis Turenne.

About the Maple Industry Council
The Maple Industry Council brings together Québec businesses that purchase, bottle, process and export maple products. Its members market over 90% of Québec’s maple syrup, present in close to 70 countries.
